Ezra"Pop" music is simply short for the term "popular" music. Meaning simply that a large # of people find a song or a music act enjoyable. Overall it was everyday people who made it so...a very long time ago. Either by singing the same song,buying the "sheet music" or seeing that act at a concert hall.
In terms of the recording industry,"pop" music was invented by Billboard Magazine. Billboard started in 1950 and even back then they were (for whatever reason) keeping track of the songs people were enjoying most. The first actual #1 "pop"/popular song was "Siemper Filelis" by The Marine Corp Band in 1950.
When rock and roll hit it big in 1955,the Billboard "pop" charts (now Hot 100) took on a whole new meaning.
Every decade "pop" music means something different. It's all still popular,or "pop" music,whatever kind of music it is.
