"Abba: The Movie", featuring concert footage shot in Australia and directed by future Oscar-nominated director Lasse Hallström, was released to theatres in Australia and northern Europe in December, 1977. It was released in the UK and Germany in February, 1978, and elsewhere in Europe in the spring of '78. It wasn't released in the U.S. until 1979. It was re-released theatrically across Europe in the summer of 2008, co-incident with the release of the film version of the Abba-based musical "Mamma Mia!". According to IMDb, the film grossed over $832,000 USD.
The four principal members of ABBA are:
Bjorn Ulvaeus - Guitar, lyricist
Benny Andersson - Keyborards, composer
Agnetha Faltskog - Lead vocals (soprano)
Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad - Lead vocals (mezzo-soprano)
Ulveaus and Andersson provided background vocals. Ulvaeus occasionally led, most notably on "Does Your Mother Know" and a few others. Andersson only sang lead on one Abba song. (Ironically, when the four first started working together, the two women provided back-up to the guys -- who were already a duet -- but it quickly became evident to everyone that it sounded much better the other way.)
ABBA the movie was a project that evolve during its filming ,the first goal was to film the 1977 Australian tour and make a documentary (as in 1979 with the world tour filmed by Swedish tv SVT) but during the trip it was decided that it would become a film ,so Lasse Hallström wrote a kind of synopsis in a hurry and made it as a "fan film" when a radio journalist was sent by his boss (a kind of little dictator) to "catch" an interview with the group ,and that seemed quite impossible as the band was busy touring and resting in hotels ,so he seems to miss them every time he arrives at the next hotel !
though the plot seems thin ,the film goes on to become a point of view (not necessarily the exactitude ) but somewhat interesting on the band ,there's a kind of humour and action ,people appreciating /hating the group (especially parents of children who adore them !
so if you like the band it's a pretty entertainment !

No, "Mamma Mia" is not a true story. It is a fictional story written by Catherine Johnson, with music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and BjΓΆrn Ulvaeus from ABBA, and inspired by the songs of the Swedish pop group.
"Mamma Mia" was based on ABBA's biggest hit songs and were combined to create a story. So the theme for Mamma Mia would be the ABBA songs.
