There are sad people in this movie, but I will name a few:
Christine - she gets depressed as she mourn her long-passed father when she visits the Cemetery
Erik - the Phantom's true name (in the original book by Gaston Leroux) he is sad as how the world looks down upon him and nobody will give him a chance at love because his deformed face
Raul is sad at the beginning and the end when you discover that Christine 's Phantom had visited her grave, he sees the rose his signature that he had been there. He wonders if the Phantom never stopped being a part of her life. He bought the monkey music box at the auction at her dying request to place it on her grave, he does not know the monkey music box belongs to the Phantom.
I think the saddest part for me is probably the general fact that the Phantom has never been shown love or compassion. It's really sad. That and the fact that everybody wants him dead because of all the people he has killed. He only kills people because he's never shown any compassion.
