Basically he tunes the orchestra to concert pitch.

Another answer

The concert master, or leader, is the principal first violinist. In addition to playing the violin, she or he makes decisions on behalf of the full orchestra on stage. For example, she indicates to the principal oboist when to sound the note to which the orchestra tunes up, and oversees the tuning-up process. He decides when the orchestra should stand up to acknowledge applause, when to sit down, and when to leave the stage. She accepts the thanks expressed by the conductor to the orchestra, and ensures that all members are included in those thanks. In short, he represents the orchestra in circumstances where it is impractical for individual players to represent themselves.

The Concertmaster usually plays the violin when you are in orchestra. In band, it's usually Oboe, Clarinet, or Flute.
The leader of an orchestra plays the violin and sits at the front of the first violins, top right.

The concert master in an orchestra is another name for the first chair of the first violinists. He/she traditionally enters the stage after the rest of the orchestra but before the conductor and gives the orchestra an A to tune to. He/she also acts as the substitute conductor in professional orchestras.

The concertmaster is basically the leader of an orchestra or band, second to the conductor. He/she is the principal first violinist--however, in woodwind bands, the principal clarinetist (or sometimes flutist) usually takes the role of concertmaster/mistress. This is the same in brass bands; the first cornet or Trumpet fills in.
