When people say they're indie they usually are independent.
The term indie usually refers to indie rock which is is a sub-genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s.
Indie rock, derived from "independent", describes the small and relatively low budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved.
It also may refer to : indie art, design, litterature.
Indie is always confused for a specific style of music that some indie bands play. (if you ever heard the Juno soundtrack... that is what people think indie music is) But indie refers to bands or artists that are not signed with a major recording company. some examples of indie bands are push play lights resolve and some underground bands.

Indie is not a genre. The biggest music in Britain is dubstep.
when someone refers to being indie, they are usually referring to music, as in "I have an indie record" it means they aren't signed to any major recording company.
15 or 16 years old i would say
Just be yourself. Indie is independent!
you don't really become indie. you just are indie. of course there are things that indie people do so if you want to find out whether you are indie just see whether you do those things. if you like indie music and dress like indie then you are indie but you cannot 'become' indie. Also, see
Being an individual is the true meaning. But indie people are big on clothes and also they dont give a s--- about how they dress. They often wear what is big in fashion right now but true indie people dont have a style as they wear whatever the f--- they want to. People that listen to indie music are indie, if you dress like an indie person but dont listen to indie music then you are a fake attention seeker. You migh think indies are attention seekers but real indies are often shy and don't go over the top telling you that they are cooler than you, even though they are 100% sure that they are cooler than whoever they talk to. When indie people talk about music they can yell out 100s of bands you have never heard or thought existed. Fake indies go over the top promoting an already famous band that has an indie sound to it. Indie people seem happy, that because they are, their music is upbeat and makes you wanna jump around and plus they know everyone wants to be like them. It is hard being indie, you cant just dress indie, you need to be a natural and not even realise it, once people see that you fit the indie criteria, they will shout out indie when ever they see you and are really happy to have a indie friend. And indie people are really really smart.
You cant, an indie haircut on an non-indie person isnt an indie hair cut, indie haircuts make people jelous but they dont stand out as the lone feature of that person. Getting what you fell like and not copying others is your first step to being indie, or you can take the easy way and copy others and eventually fail at being indie.

A song is indie if it is on a independent label. In actuality this is more complicated than it seems because some indie bands join major labels but are still respected by the indie culture. For example, the band Sonic Youth have been on a major label since the 90's but many people still respect them and call them indie. Indie may also refer to a specific style of music. In that respect indie is an umbrella term meaning that it encompases many sub genres and styles. Usually, trends birth these sub genres and styles. So when someone calls a song indie they may refer to a certain trend in music as well as whether the artist is on a major label or not.
