Best Answer

Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass.

Sometimes included in that list is the Harp and the Piano.

+++

Harp definitely. Also Guitar, Lute, Lyre, Harpsichord, Mandolin, Banjo; and various forms of these. Hurdy-gurdy (which uses a friction-disc rotated against the strings to produce its drone-like sound).

'

The Piano is a bit ambiguous because although stringed its action is percussive whilst the Harpsichord mechanism plucks its strings; but both tend to be classed as keyboard instruments.

The most obvious are violins, violas, cellos and double bases, but I think Guitars and harps (...) are considered string instruments as well.
