good question: The hit was by Commander Cody and his lost planet airmen in 1972. BTW Commander Cody is George Frayne. However the song dates back to 1951 as "Hot Rod Race" by Tiny Hill. After Tiny Hill and his Orchestra, The song, as "Hot Rod Lincoln" was popularized by Johnny Bond in 1960, Then Charlie Ryan (one of the composers) covered it in 1964, Commander Cody in 1972, Asleep at the Wheel in 1988 and punk-rockers All in 1989.
