Chubby Checker popularized "The Twist," both the song and the dance, in 1960, when his version of the song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on its R&B Singles chart. Just over a year later, towards the end of 1961, the song received new interest and went back to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1962, making it the only single ever to hit #1 on two separate chart runs.
It was written by Hank Ballard and originally recorded by his band, Hank Ballard and The Midnighters in 1958 as the flip side of one of their singles. Checker also had a top 10 hit with "Let's Twist Again," and in the early 1980's, hit the top 20 with the rap group the Fat Boys on their version of the song.
Chubby Checker's #1 success with the song in its 2 separate runs can be attributed to the two entirely different Demographics that embraced it. Its first #1 placing came from the kids who loved it initially, it's dance and sexuality. Over a year later, the song caught on with "the beautiful people," the celebs and the adults who followed them, thus earning its 2nd #1 placing.

CHUBBY CHECKER WAS A SINGER, HE WAS POPULAR IN THE FIFTIES MOST POPULAR FOR THE TWIST WHICH WAS A DANCE
In numerous music videos and performances - most famously his performance of 'Hound Dog' on the Milton Berle show - Elvis would use dance moves in which he vigorously moved his legs and his knees. This of course cause movement of his pelvis and hips. This was sometimes considered offensive and said famous 'Hound Dog' performance on Milton Berle was the landmark of 'Elvis the Pelvis'. Many viewers found it offensive and when he appeared on the Steve Allen show later on that year, Allen made him perform a much more 'appropriate' song (I want you, I need you, I love you) in a tux, without any hip movement. Allen wanted to present Elvis on his show as "The new-improved Elvis Presley" Elvis swallowed his pride, did the bit and left. That's where 'Elvis the Pelvis' came from.
Other than for his movie roles, which required input from dance instructors, Elvis moved to the rhythm of the music and just..."felt" it as opposed to being choreographed. Elvis' stage performances, beginning in Las Vegas in 1969, whereby he danced while singing are exceptional to witness even these (approximately) four decades after his death.
