We have two that share the same hatch date. One started crowing around 5 months old. The other not until almost 8 months old. I suppose there is a standard, but my roosters were to stubborn to follow it.

When is a chicken officially an adult?

A hen is officially an adult when she starts laying and has a full comb and wattle. A rooster is officially an adult when he starts crowing, fertilizing eggs, and has a full comb and wattle. Remember that a hen's comb and wattle should be smaller than a rooster's comb and wattle.

Why does your hen look like a rooster?

Personally, after raising chickens of all types for 35 years, my hens look like hens. However, some of my roosters also look like hens. Not only can there be delayed feathering in a rooster, but genetically there is a condition called "hen feathered rooster". In delayed feathering, the rooster pattern will occur eventually. In the genetic condition, you know you've got a "hen feathered rooster" when he starts mounting the hens and exposes the penis during a "cloacal kiss".

When can you breed your chicken?

Hens will start allowing the rooster to mount at about 6 months old or so. Some pullets do not accept the roosters advances until later but eventually she will. Once your hen starts to lay eggs the rooster will be interested.

If you have a rooster and laying hens will you always get fertilized eggs?

Usually, but not always. Not all eggs are guaranteed to be fertilized - here are some factors that can determine fertility rates; There is some disagreement, but it is generally accepted that a rooster can only tend to from six to twelve hens. When a hen first starts to lay even though the rooster has been doing his job you will find infertile eggs. Then, however, you will notice most eggs are fertile. Some roosters do not cover their hens well, or will be less fertile than others - hatch rates may vary.Suggestion:Always test a new rooster as not all roosters are fertile. Separate a few proven hens with a new rooster, wait "2 weeks" to clear the hens system of a previous roosters seminal fluids then try to hatch those eggs.

How long can a rooster keep breeding?

A rooster only needs to breed the hen one time for her to be able to lay fertile eggs for 2 or 3 weeks. Also The passage of the sperm up the oviduct is rather slow so it may be a few days after the first encounter before the egg is viable. If you are introducing a new rooster to the flock and there are no other males give the birds some time before collecting eggs for incubation. 10 days should ensure all the eggs collected are viable.
