Conn makes a lot of different models. The 50M is an upper-level student horn. It's American made, and much better than Conn's later student models. Truth be told, it's not really a Conn. It's a Vito with Conn engraving. Vito horns are based on Beaugnier French saxophones, and area good design. If you're looking for a solid student horn, the 50M is a good choice.
There are lots of different Conn models. Some, like the 14M and 16M are made in Mexico and aren't of very good quality. There's a confusing array of student horns from Conn including the 50M (American-made) and some newer high-model number horns made in China or Taiwan. Then there are horns like the 6M and 10M which are older models that are considered professional horns, and are quite a bit more expensive than Conn's student horns. These come in the "naked lady" version (pre '50s) the transitional, and the modern 6M and 10M. The "naked lady" and transitional versions are quite expensive, but they're supposed to have a great sound. It's hard to evaluate an entire make of Saxophone, but overall Conn tends to make a good product.
500-800 dollars
Yes, Conn is one of the oldest brands out there and one in good condition can go for some good money. Though pricing strongly depends on the condition and model.

The best saxophone brand is a matter of opinion. My current opinion is a Yamaha or a Conn.

The Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet is my personal favorite. You can get their recordings at borders.com. Unfortunately, they are not available on itunes.
