Absolutely, especially in the 1970's. He dressed in costumes while he played piano, ranging from an entire outfit covered in the most colorful feathers known to man, to a sequined jacket on a cat costume. Elton John also wore large, face-covering, highly decorated, outrageous-looking spectacles with all kinds of huge lighted frames around the lens. Even his piano playing is extraordinary: he improvises his songs at great length, with spontaneous creativity to the capacity of extending a two and a half minute long song to over 14 minutes [namely, Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time)]. With the exception of Elton John tribute performers, he is the only one who does handstands on the piano. Therefore, one can easily say Elton John was the atypical performer.
