The biggest two choices are what size do you want and how much you are willing to spend.

The Ukulele has four sizes:

  • Standard aka Soprano
  • Concert
  • Tenor
  • Baritone

There are lots of other variations as well, including the pineapple, the cigar box and the banjo uke.

Pricing is the next big choice. An inexpensive Uke can be purchased for $20-$25. It is likely to be a composite with friction peg tuning, but is certainly adequate for learning some basics. Better sounding Ukes can be purchased in the $50-$100 range with better tuning mechanisms and solid wood parts. You can get into the several thousand dollar range for custom made specialty instruments.
