Although his mother demanded he stay on top of his schoolwork Ellington began to become and remain a "C" student. 3 months before graduating high school Duke dropped out and went on to pursue his music career

He was an African-American professional jazz musician popular in the 1920s. He played piano, composed many songs and had his own band that became very, very well-known. I'm pretty sure it was called The Duke Ellington Orchestra or something similar to that.
