It depends. Is this a famous musician, a well-known musician, or an unknown? You get what you pay for. Some can command hundreds of thousands of dollars for a concert. Some are happy to perform for tips.
Musicians who are happy to do a concert for tips are either not very good or really see a great opportunity derived from your event. Typically, you should call the office of the local musicians' union, affiliated with the AFM (American Federation of Musicians) to get a full detailed rated schedule.
This union is one of the weakest performance unions, so unless you're a big concert hall, you can usually get around their rules. However, follow these general rules:
Clubs: minimum is about $85/player for smaller clubs and a few hours.
Restaurants: negotiate. You can get 250 to 500 for a solo gig for 2 to 5 hours on the West Coast.
Concert Halls: Main musician, 500 to 3,000, depending on the audience and ticket price.
Supporting musician, 165 to 400 per player, depending on concert and required time (rehearsal, stage plotting/lighting, etc. You may also need to consider travel fees, cartage fees (for certain large instruments, including drums and keyboards), and meal allowances, depending on your call times for the musicians.
Once you get into names and minor names, the fees go up, because they are driving your sales and can demand more money.
These figures are rough, and include items that could be paid as "benefits" under a formal contract.
Unfortunately, Local 47 in Los Angeles is not smart enough to post their information on line for you to look at, and the fee structure is several pages long. Give them a call if you're on the West Coast.
