Chopin wrote 27 etudes; two sets of 12 (op.10 and op.25) and "Three New Etudes."
The last of the Three New Etudes.
Chopin composed for the piano. His pieces include Preludes, Nocturnes, Waltzes, four Scherzos, Etudes and a Concerto.
Etude might be the word you are going for. It is the French word for study. But Chopin put the old notion of 'etude' to rest when he wrote his. His etudes are groundbreaking. They are studies to be sure, but it is not at all unusual to hear them in concert settings. He wrote his etudes as pieces of music, interesting on their own independent of their technical aspects, which are formidable. His friend Franz Liszt was inspired by them, and created some of the most fantastic 'etudes' ever written, the Transcendental Etudes. Maybe the word you are really going for, then, is exercise, as in Hanon or Pishna.
Dated up to today April.27, 2010, it was Melodie Zhao who officially recorded all the etudes at 13 years old. However, one more recording will be released in May, 2010, featuring the youngest ever EMI artist: Shengliang Zhang(or Nick Name for Niu Niu), this will soon be the officially youngest pianist ever recorded the etudes, he was 12 Years Old. The vast majority of composers have written something for the piano. Some of those who have written extensively for that instrument are Bax, Chopin, and Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Gershwin, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, many Jazz pianists. There is probably more good piano music, solo, ensemble and orchestral (concerti) than any one person could be exposed to in a lifetime.
