Short circuit somewhere in the reverse-light or even the reverse switch itself. Other causes are also possible.
Physically can't shift to reverse - maybe linkage worn or out of adjustment Car won't move in reverse -(Auto) maybe bad transmission pump
. . . then that would be alternating current, or simply, 'AC'.
Have the ujoints inspected. As they get old and worn they will develop play and the reason it thumps is caused by the ujoint being at one side then you shift towards another direction and it switches sides essentially hitting and causing your thump.

GP shift is the reverse of street shift.....so 1st is up the rest down.
To shift the recon into reverse push the red button at the right break lever labeled "R" down and pull the lever back. Then shift down using the down arrow on the electric shift. Reverse light should come on and back you go.
Check your fuses
are you pressing the brake as you try to shift?
Odds are the clutch is in need of a adjustment or replacement.
Mazda 626 does have reverse if its a 5 speed standard H shift then it is 6th gear.
