It should be in you owners mannual.
Hi, I just did that and you open the rear hatch and undo the screws that the hatch door when closed hides, after you undo these you will notice the light assembly is loose and you just pull and then pull some more, I thought something else had to be holding in it but its just a little plastic knob that fits into a gromet, and its tight, pull hard and striaght out towards the back,, it will come out, Dale M
For a 2003 this worked. Should work for a 98-03.
Rear: Brake, Back-up, Tail, Turn signal (3 bulbs, all # 3157)
To access the rear bulbs, open the liftgate and remove the two Phillips head screws from the side of the housing as shown in the center photo above. Slowly and firmly rotate the assembly away from the vehicle until it disengages from the ball pin socket that secures it in back.
Each of the three light sockets, all containing the same exact bulb type, can be removed by turning them counter-clockwise 1/4 turn.
The top is the brake light The middle is the directional light The bottom is the reverse light
If the light bulb turns out to be fine, you might need to change the socket which has contacts that tend to malfunction. Part is around $10.
Due to lack of room to access the lockring and pull the bulb and socket assembly out the headlight housing can be removed from the front of the vehicle. These directions are for 99 and later GCs (on 98 and earlier the grill has to be removed before removing the headight housing but on those earlier models there is sufficient room to get to the bulb lockring so the housing does not need to be removed)
With hood open locate the screw that holds this assembly in place. There is only one and it is located above the and about in the middle of the housing. The housing itself is held by dimples in the housing that correspond to bumps in the brackets that hold and align the headlights. Remove the screw and pull the bottom edge of the housing toward you. This requires a little bit of force but it will just pop out providing access to the lockring that holds the bulb and socket into the housing.
There will be only one bulb for high and low beams both (two filaments in the bulb) and your parts store will have a reference book to determine which one to buy. Buy two and replace them both at the same time just because if one goes out the other may not be far behind.....they're inexpensive. Take the old bulb with you when you buy the new one just for the ablilty to visually check the bulb to make sure you're getting the correct one.
To remove the bulb rotate the lockring counterclockwise and pull the socket/bulb from the housing. The bulb will be a halogen type and will have a little plastic connecter holding it into the socket. Just pry the tab out and the bulb will ease out of the socket. It doesnt screw in at all.
Take care when installing the new bulb to not touch the glass at all with your hands as this will shorten the life of the bulb due to oils on your hand. If you do touch the glass you can clean it with alcohol.
Reverse the process to reinstall.....you shouldn't need to have the headlights realigned.
Good luck !!!
By going to buy the Repair manual book for your vehicle at an auto parts store for about 20 bucks. It has the answer and the answers to many others questions and will help you to be a better informed vehicle owner when you need service or repair. And show you how simple or complex a repair or service job may be and any special tools you may need. Now, if you're too cheap to buy the book, then Google your question and let one of these sites tell you - each and every time and then suck up the expensive repair bills when a shady shop bills you something you don't need or goes far beyond they should.
