Its for installing an auxiliary audio device, like a CD changer or a satellite radio. You have to remove your radio to attach a device to it. There was no auxiliary input in the 2003 Toyota matrix and was not optional the first aux was for the 2006 matrix and up
1. Open the ash tray and remove the felt lined insert, behind it is a bolt you need to remove. 2. With that bolt removed you can pop out the ash tray/climate control unit, and you will be able to see the two bottom bolts for the radio. 3. Above the radio you will need to pop out the ac vent, it isn't screwed in so you just have to pull on it and it will pop out. With the vent removed you will see the top two bolts for the radio. 4. Remove the 4 bolts and the radio will slide out.
