Buy a radiator flush kit and radiator flush additive from your local auto parts store. Follow the package instructions. You can also buy a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual. For the 1984-2001 XJ Cherokee it is highly recommend that you not use the radiator drain valve as it is plastic and rather fragile. Removing the lower radiator hose is faster and easier for draining the cooling system.
on all radiators there is a knob on the bottom of the radiator that twists off to empty out coolant. u will not need to take it off all the way cuz if trying so the coolant will squirt everywhere, just a few turns until u get a steady flow going. once done check the used coolant for debree (dirt rocks etc etc) if clean its fine, if dirty flush radiator again, but this time jus fill with water and run till warm, then flush out all the water until no debree comes out. tighten the knob up and put 50/50 coolant and water into the radiator and top it off with water and let it run until warm so all the bubbles go away. on all radiators there is a knob on the bottom of the radiator that twists off to empty out coolant. u will not need to take it off all the way cuz if trying so the coolant will squirt everywhere, just a few turns until u get a steady flow going. once done check the used coolant for debree (dirt rocks etc etc) if clean its fine, if dirty flush radiator again, but this time jus fill with water and run till warm, then flush out all the water until no debree comes out. tighten the knob up and put 50/50 coolant and water into the radiator and top it off with water and let it run until warm so all the bubbles go away.
