It was during the war of 1812. Key was at fort McHenry near Baltimore, Maryland. He saw a British attack on he American Army. He watched as canoes boomed and blazed through the night. The next morning he wasn't sure who won . Then, he looked thorough a telescope. He spotted something a huge American Flag waving from the fort. The sight inspired Key quickly wrote the words to the star spangled banner.
