The Beach Boys got their name from an executive at their first record company, Russ Regan. They originally called themselves the Pendletones, because they thought that if they took that name, the Pendleton shirt company (which made the checkered wool jackets they wore) might give them free shirts and jackets. Regan, though, heard their song "Surfin'" and gave them the name Beach Boys.
Scott Totten, guitarist and vocalist of the modern Beach Boys line-up, was born and raised in Orange County, California.
They technically broke up in 1998. After Carl Wilson passed away, Mike Love fired Al Jardine. Brian Wilson had left the group in the late 80s, but still occasionally made guest appearances with the group throughout the 90s. In 1998, Mike Love got permission from the other surviving ex-Beach Boys to tour under The Beach Boys' name. The current "Beach Boys" includes Love and longtime keyboardist Bruce Johnston, and several sidemen. Al Jardine and Brian Wilson each tour with their own bands.
They still play gigs from time to time..Dennis and Carl Wilson have passed away, but Mike Love, Al Jardine, and Bruce Johnston still play, with back up performers..Sometimes Brian Wilson shows up to play.
The short answer is "because Carl Wilson died." Carl, one of the original members of the Beach Boys, was the "glue" that held the band together on the road, and when he died of cancer in 1998, another original Beach Boy, Al Jardine, quit. That left Mike Love and Bruce Johnston in the group. Mike is the only original Beach Boy still in the band.

Kokomo is a made up name by The Beach Boys, however, since then many states have renamed cities Kokomo.
