Gothic Rock emerged from the post-punk scene in the late 70's - early 80's. The earliest exponents of Gothic Rock were probably Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Birthday Party, and Joy Division. Bauhaus arguably had the first defining goth rock song with their release of 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'

Emily is the most popular Gothic girl name.
One might argue that in terms of chart success,Evanescence wasthe most successful overtly Gothic rock bands. For longevity and influence, it'd be The Cure, Joy Division, or Bauhaus. The earliest rock band with a Gothic tone is probably The Velvet Underground."Arguably", Evanescence is not goth rock, therefore Siouxsie and the Banshees or Sisters of Mercy would be more realistic alternative answers.
Gothic Rock came about as part of the post-punk movement in the 1970s. It was the main influence on what would later become known as Industrial. Gothic Metal is a term which first came about when Paradise Lost released their album Gothic in the early 1990s. Now, most so-called "Gothic Metal" bands are neither gothic nor Metal. Gothmetal.net, for example, has a tendency to list any band with a female singer as such, which is a bit absurd.
