McCartney became an atheist at fourteen, after his mother's death from Breast cancer. In the 1990s he said "I'm not religious, but I'm very spiritual."

His 2001 song "Freedom" (written in the wake of 9/11; he was aboard an airliner that was in line at Kennedy Airport, with the same planes used in the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks) describes freedom as "a right given by God", so he may have changed his views in later years.
