Very difficult to explain briefly since both have a very large span of styles, cultures etc. However - Opera evolved from the 16th century and is basically a form in which singers and musicians combine to perform a structured dramatic work [a play with music both instrumental and vocal] which tells a story. It usually takes over an hour and is usually broken into sections [acts]. This normally takes place indoors - opera house, concert hall etc. But can be outdoors on occasions - Verona Arena. Rock music is a loose type of popular music that evolved during and after the 1960s. It has its roots in rock and roll and rockabilly [1940 and 1950s], and that evolved from blues, Country Music etc. Going further back rock music evolved from many other musical influences - folk, jazz, Classical Music etc. Unlike opera, if it does tell a story it is usually contained in one number, or song - there might no even be vocals - And, most unlike opera, a lot of rock is not in a set form, it is 'improvisation' - just like a jazz 'jam session'. Of course it is not unusual for rock concerts to be held outdoors. Also while opera usually has scenery and costumes, rock does not and the numbers of performers / musicians are greater in opera than rock. However - there is 'rock opera' examples being 'Hair' 'Tommy' 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and that's another story. I would suggest that you us the web to look up the various species to get a full history / description of each.

Rock Music is traditionally heavier and harder sounding, while Pop Music is lighter and more modern. Both of these genres are very broad, and can be further divided into subgenres, which better describe the genre.
