This type of Opera is called 'verismo'. This school of opera came to the fore with Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana [1890]. Other examples are 'Pagliacci' by Leoncavallo and 'Andrea Chenier' by Giordano. Although much earlier Bizet's 'Carmen' is also of this type as it was really the first realistic opera.
