The NWMP was established in 1873 to patrol and assert sovereignty on Canada's new North West. In 1919 Parliament voted to merge the NWMP with the Dominion Police, a federal force that provided policing services to eastern Canada. As a result, the new organisation was called the RCMP.
According to the website of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), its predecessor, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) was created primarily: "to stop liquor trafficking in the North-west; to gain the respect and confidence of the natives; to collect customs dues; and to perform all the duties of a police force."
The North West Mounted Police (NWMP) is still with us today, just in a different form. In 1904, King Edward VII honoured the NWMP with the Royal prefix, after which they were known as the Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP). On February 1, 1920, the Royal North West Mounted Police (RNWMP) was merged with the with the Dominion Police, thereby creating today's Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The RCMP, formally known as the NWMP, were fundamental to Canada taking control of Western Canada and suppressing rebellions from the locals in Canadian colonies. Today they represent the Federal government in many regions of Canada keeping the peace and serving regions that are too small to have their own police force.
Today The Canadian Northwest Mounted Police Are Know As The RCMP Royal Canadian Mounted Police or the Canadian mounties for short. ========================== At first, they were known simply as the Mounted Police. Then they became known as the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP). Later they became the Royal North-West Mounted Police (RNWMP), but "Canadian" was not a part of their name until they became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
To assert Canadian control over the people included in their purchase of Western Canada. The NWMP was based on the Paramilitary Royal Irish Constabulary because of the similar responsibility, which was to control a hostile and sometimes violent colonised people. The NWMP is today's RCMP.
There is no difference I know this because I am smart
Because the RCMP, previously known as the RNWMP and the NWMP, were the paramilitary arm of the Confederation. Without them Canada would not have been able to take over Western Canada. After 1919, their role expanded and their name changed to RCMP and they became Ottawa's police force all across the land, though not so much in the original province of Canada.
Some of the differences are that the nwmp had some different things to deal with than the rcmp.

the nwmp got paid 50 cents per day
The NWMP were the forerunners of the RCMP, and were important as being the only keepers of the law in the Northwest Territory (which before 1905 included all of Alberta and Saskatchewan and earlier parts of Manitoba as well) in the wild and woolly days of the Canadian frontier

Well since the NWMP is Canadian and this is Canadian history we are talking about, CANADA HAS PRIME MINISTERS NOT PRESIDENTS!
