It was dangerous because:

- Of infection

Many patients died because of infection as doctors did not start washing their hands or sterilising equipment until the late 1800's

-Bleeding

Patients also died because they lost so much blood during surgery and/or through shock

-Pain

There were not any suitable anaesthetics apart from herbal remedies and alcohol but these did not completley relieve symptoms, and so all operations were carried out as swiftly as possible
