Kim Campbell was not elected Prime Minister. The Conservative party wasn't going to win the next election so Brian Mulroney, the current PM stepped down leaving her in charge so he personally wouldn't lose the next election.

Kim Campbell became PM after Brian Mulroney stepped down. Campbell was a Conservative and when the election was held, the Conservative party was pretty much wiped out. Only 2 or 3 PC candidates were elected. Campbell lost her seat, the PCs lost their majority and were no longer the party in power. This meant Campbell was no longer PM.
