The official flag of Canada (the Maple Leaf flag) was adopted in 1965, replacing the previously-used design of the Canadian Red Ensign. In 1921, King George V proclaimed the official colors of Canada as red, from Saint George's Cross, and white, from the French royal emblem since King Charles VII.
When Canada became a country of it's own it needed a flag, so the government sent the message out to the people to create a design for the new flag that resembled Canada. After many good and bad designs they finally stumbled across the red and white maple leaf, the government decided it was the best flag they saw, and made it the flag forevermore.
