Blacksmiths played a vital role in communities in the 1800s. Working with iron and steel, they forged horseshoes, farm instruments, wrought iron gates and Fencing, cooking utensils and even wagon wheels and other wagon parts such as springs. They repaired vital components of agricultural equipment and were also able to fashion weapons.
Anvil
An anvil is a heavy block of steel that has surfaces both flat and round used to pound the hot metal into appropriate shapes.
Vise
A vice was used to hold the metal stationary as the blacksmith hammered and worked it.
Tongs
Tongs were used to remove the hot metal from the fire and to hold it as the blacksmith hammered and shaped it.
Water Trough
A large container of water kept near the work area used to help cool the hot metal as the blacksmith worked it.
