Many slaves did escape North. They even settled down in northern States. but a law was made forcing slaves to go all the way to Canada to be free, or else they could be taken back to slavery. this made it even harder for them to escape. Other reasons for not escpaing was that it was a long, hard journey with little food, cold weather, and slave catchers with their dogs on the slaves' tails. if the slaves were caught, they could be whipped, sold further down South where it was grueling, have their fingers, toes, or hands cut off, or even killed. These factors reduced their will to escape greatly. Also many were sick or weak from the poor conditions, or had family members unwilling or unable to go, or maybe even felt content where they lived. Sometimes if they ran away, friends or relatives still in slavery might be harmed. But those who did escape often did it with the help of the Underground railroad and its conductors. They made settlements in Canada like Buxton where they could be safe and live their lives freely. Many slaves did escape North.
