Nickelodeon never provided specific reasons as to why Rugrats was cancelled in 2004.
There are many suggestions as to why the show was pulled, such as it was losing popularity, but these are speculative.
Rugrats had had a long "life" for a cartoon, and Nickelodeon had too many other shows they wanted to introduce and show. Plus, most of the audience that had watched Rugrats as children (including myself) had grown up into teenagers and adults, and Nickelodeon wanted to appeal to a younger, newer audience.
To me Rugrats ended because the audiences would have not been familiar with the original seasons and the meaning would have been lose somewhere since the show ran for so-long. I think they should have re-played the series from beginning to end more often new audiences of new generations would be familiar with the whole series. The show changed so much from beginning to end that with different generations things were lost, changes disappointed some and they ran out of story lines. However now that the show has been off the air for so long they could likely have some new story lines to bring it back. I love the show and always will. It really is very clever and in my opinion the best cartoon of all time!
That's an opinion. I don't want offend any fans of All Grown Up, but in my opinion All Grown Up was a disgrace to the Rugrats. When All Grown Up premiered in November 2003, November 2003 is when Nickelodeon started to lose touch. All grown Up shouldn't be on Nickelodeon. All Grown Up should never air again. If you like All Grown Up feel free to buy a DVD of it. If you love Rugrats so much, please never watch All Grown Up. People of all ages watch the Regular Rugrats.
