Most (all?) of the countries or colonies that formed the British Empire (of which Canada was one) did not need to go to war to obtain home rule/ independence. The British Empire was developed from a democratic country and when colonised people became educated enough ask for their own rule, Britain could hardly refuse. Canada was not completely independent from great Britain, but now a central government would run the country. Canadians would elect their own leaders.

English and Canadians
Canada was still a British territory at the time. Thus, when Britain went to war, the Canadians went to work as British citizens.
They used to be, but they have not been for many years. In 1867, Canada became a dominion, and in 1982, the last vestiges of British rule were officially ended. Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, but it is also an entirely independent nation. The name British Columbia refers back to the time when Canada was like a colony of Great Britain. These days, many Canadians think of themselves as first and foremost citizens of Canada; but some (especially older English-speaking Canadians) still recall the historical ties with England and still think of the British monarchy with fondness.
