James Cook was an explorer who was keen to map new places. He had Tasman's map so he knew where to go. Later on, around 1800 ships came here for seals and whales for their skin and oil. They hired Maori crew. By 1820 ships came to trade for timber and flax from Australia. Maori traded for guns and war broke loose. The musket wars lasted for 20 years as 1 tribe fought another. Some were wiped out. About 50,000 died.
At that time only 1000 white people lived in NZ. Missionaries tried to stop the wars. Finally, in 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and New Zealand became a British colony. Most settlers were specially selected for their good health and skills, unlike Australia, where most were petty criminals. By 1900 the population was 1 million. In 2008 it was 4.5 million. British people still migrate to New Zealand.
In 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, which was an agreement between the Maori and British Crown. So in 1942 the British started bringing English settlers into New Zealand, the choose to do this because they thought there was plenty of land there, that they British wanted to protect the Maori as they were very naive and they started to put in ports and factories. It was because the British wanted to start sovereignty in NZ and bringing British settlers over to NZ was a good way to start. The sort of immigrants they were looking for were for preferable a young married couple with no children. A middle aged couple under 40 with no more than 2 children in which are are 7, to be in the state to work and want to work for wages. There are 4 waves of migration which came after the British settlers, so you could research that if you want further information.
