Cause he was upset about Johnny's death. Johnny Cade was everything to him, like a kid brother. So when Johnny died, he just couldn't take it. He rob the store, knowing that the fuzz would be after him. And since they know he had a gun, even though it wasn't loaded and only for show, they shot him down. He did all of this, so he could die and be with Johnnycake. :)
