Britain, Germany, France, and Russia took advantage of the crumbling Manchu dynasty and forced treaties on China creating "treaty ports" and granting exclusive trading privileges in various parts of the country.

After Germany declared war on Russia to help Austria-Hungary (who was attacked by Russia after they attacked Serbia), France made clear their intent to stand by their ally (Russia, obviously), so Germany declared war on them, too, planning to take them out then go after Russia to prevent a two-front war. Unluckily for Germany, Russia prepared pretty quickly so Germany had to send troops to the Eastern Front as well and fight a two-front war.
The United States, Germany, and Russia were three major powers that were not members of the League of Nations. The League of Nations lasted from 1919 to 1946.
After Britain and France gave away Czechoslovakia to Germany, Russia made a nonaggression pact with Germany. Then after Germany attacked Russia, Russia allied with Britain, the USA and Free France, and other Allied nations.
