Prometheus wanted to give man the gift of fire even when he knew the consequences of his decision because he loved man so much that he risked his immortal body for them in attempting to give them hope of the future, and in trying to bring them closer to the gods, also to make them thrive above all the other animals of the earth.

Prometheus (whose name means forethought) wanted to give humans something important to make them thrive above the animals of the earth.

His foolish brother Epimetheus (whose name means afterthought) gave all the fur and feathers for warmth, sharp teeth and claws for protection and killing, speed for hunting and evading, wings for flight, and strength for power, to the other animals of the earth without consulting his brother.

Prometheus was worried about the humans, who had nothing useful to help them live among these greater beasts. He decided to give them fire, a gift only the gods have held for eternity, because otherwise the humans would be overthrown by the other creatures.
