Ponyboy is still a kid and sees the world with innocent eyes and everything is still new for him. Johnny wants him to stay like that while he can, to stay young and pure, because eventually, everybody grows up and doesn't have faith in the world, getting used to everything and only trusting yourself. When you're a kid, you believe in people and look for the good and everything is new to you. Johnny wants him to stay like that.
