Canada needed the railroad for many reasons, for example in 1869 the Canadians believed that the Americans would attack them. They also believed that the railroad, once built, would help transport troops to places of conflict. Another reason was that all the colonies (that's what they called the provinces in the 1800's) were very separated from each other; in the winter the river froze disconnecting New Brunswick from the rest of the provinces, and the only other effective method of transport was horse drawn carriages. Once the railroad was built it would connect them, aiding the economy with there trade and aiding the population by transporting the emigrants from and to the new colonies.

Hope this helped
