The Sun isn't a "planet" by the modern definition. It's a star.
The word "planet" comes from planetoi, which means "wanderers", since the planets appeared to be stars that moved noticeably relative to the other stars. Depending on how you look at it, the Sun might also be considered to be an aster planete, since it also appears to move through the sky relative to the stars, but to do so you'd have to consider it an aster (star) in the first place, and most people didn't. So using the ancient definition doesn't really help you much either.
