The National Anthem of South Africa is a combination of two South African patriotic hymns: Die Stem van Suid-Afrika and Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika.
Die Stem van Suid-Afrika ("The Call of South Africa") is an Afrikaans-language hymn which was the national anthem of the Apartheid government; the lyrics were written by C. J. Langenhoven in 1918 and set to music by M. L. de Villiers in 1921. An English translation was written in 1952. The song makes many references to South Africa's geography, and some to its culture; some parts reference white South African culture in particular with varying degrees of explicitness.
Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is a Xhosa-language, patriotic pan-African song, written by pastor Enoch Sontonga in 1897; the title means "God bless Africa." It was adopted as the anthem of the African National Congress in the first half of the 20th Century, and was widely considered South Africa's unofficial national anthem for much of the Apartheid era. It was made a national anthem in 1994 after ascension of Nelson Mandela to the presidency. Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika is also the national anthem of Tanzania and Zambia, albeit with different lyrics.
From 1994 to 1997, South Africa had two National Anthems: Die Stem retained official status. In 1997, the two songs were combined and slightly altered to make a new national anthem. The first half of the new anthem is taken up by Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika -- changed so that the first two lines are in Xhosa, the second two in Zulu and the final four in Sesotho -- and the second half by Die Stem, abbreviated with four lines in Afrikaans and four in English. In all, it uses the five most spoken languages in South Africa, to fit with the A.N.C.'s "rainbow nation" philosophy.
