The great Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray received an honorary Academy Award on March 30, 1992 "in recognition of his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures, and of his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an indelible influence on filmmakers and audiences throughout the world."

Ray did not attend the ceremony because he was ill, but he gave an acceptance speech by a satellite feed from his home. He died in Calcutta, India, several weeks later.
