Although where "Q" actually came from is not explained, the original role was that of Major Boothroyd played by Peter Burton in Dr. No. Burton was not available for the next movie so they picked Desmond Llewelyn to play him, then known by Q. He has the distinction of appearing in more James Bond movies (17) than any other actor.
The Desmond Llewellyn version of "Q" appeared in all movies between From Russia with Love (1963) and The World is Not Enough (1999) except Live and Let Die (1973). "Q" did not appear in Dr. No (1962) but a character known as "Major Boothroyd" appeared and equiped 007 with his now famous Walther PPK. Llewellyn died in 1999 and John Cleese took over in Die Another Day (2002). Since Daniel Craig became 007, Q has yet to appear. So the total number of movies in which Q is in is 18 out of 22.
