She warns another girl, Penelope Clearwater, who has a mirror and they use it to check corner before turning them. One of the corners they turn has the Basilisk behind it. They don't die because they only see the reflection of the Basilisk eyes but are petrified.
Hermione Granger didn't directly look into the Basilisk's eyes, if she had she would be dead. Hermione had recently discovered the identify of the monster and was, along with Penelope Clearwater, using a mirror to look around corridors. Seeing only the reflection meant they were only petrified instead of killed.
