In the movie In the Heat of the Night, Sidney Poitier is a cop passing through a town but gets accused of a murder because of his color. It is not known at first that he is a cop but when that is discovered, he is released from jail. He wants to leave this town but is asked to solve this murder by the victim's widow. The victim was building a factory in this town which would create a lot of jobs and the widow won't continue this unless Mr. Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) works the case. He decides to help them. His first suspects a wealthy plantation owner - Mr. Endicott of the murder. And when he interrogates him, Mr. Endicott slaps Mr. Tibbs. Which prompts Tibbs to slap him back. Tibbs is asked to leave for his own safety but he refuses because he promised that he would solve the murder. He solves it in the end and then leaves the town.
