Steve Jobs is one of the co-founders. When Pixar was just the Computer Graphics Division of Lucasfilm, Steve Jobs bought them in the late eighties. They started by selling software, then went to making short films, and then feature films.

From the Pixar History Website, Steve Jobs and Ed Catmull installed themselves as leaders of the firm and christened it Pixar when Jobs purchased the company in 1986.

Prior to 1986, the workers involved worked in the computer graphics division of LucasFilms, Ltd. In fact, Catmull had been employed there since 1979.
