Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma is the President of South Africa.
Zuma joined politics with the African National Congress (ANC) in 1959, before it was banned in 1961. He then joined the South African Communist Party. He was imprisoned for 10-years for conspiring to overthrow the government. In 1990, the ANC was unbanned, and Zuma was a key ANC leader in the negotiations for the change of the country. He was later elected to parliament in 1999 and became Health Minister and Deputy President of South Africa.
In the 2009 election, his party (ANC) won and helped elect him to the role of president. He took the position on 2009 May 29. In the 2014 election, preliminary results show that the ANC has won again, and Zuma will remain the President of South Africa.
The role of president is elected by elected members of parliament, thus indirectly elected.
