Mr. William F. Bailey started Miami Elevator Company in 1947 after moving to Miami from Lexington, KY where he worked for Otis Elevator. His sons Stephen and Gary Bailey, both graduates of Florida State University, and Stephen after serving in the USAF Strategic Air Command, returned to Miami to run the company for decades until they sold to Dover Elevator in 1992. The Baileys had 32 offices in FL employing 500 people, 4 in AZ, employing 100. The Baileys purchased Arizona Elevator Co (the up and down boys) in 1980. Miami Elevator eventually had a market share close to 75% of all units sold in the state of Florida and even a higher percentage in Arizona. They also clearly were the preferred maintenance company in each of these states with over one third of all elevators under service contracts with them. Stephen and Gary received many of their industries most prestigious awards, such as the 1995 award for selling 10,000 Dover Hydraulic Elevators. ThyssenKrupp purchased the company in 1999 from Dover Corp (elevator division) to make them the largest elevator company in the United States and third largest worldwide.
