Yes Dally does go to the rumble in the Outsiders. He was suposed to be in the hospital because he was in the fire. When Ponyboy and Two-Bit came to visit he asked for Two-Bits 10 inch switch blade, he then hide it under his pillow. Later, Dally treatens the nurse to let him go with Two-Bits switch blade.
Dallas Winston shows up late to the rumble. He was in the hospital and had to sneak his way out because he didn't want to miss the fight. When he arrives at the rumble, he calls out - which causes Darry to turn his head and Paul punches him, starting the fight.
Ponyboy feels sick but he wants to fight in the rumble anyway, so he can avenge Johnny. He doesn't want Two-Bit to tell Darry this because Darry would make him stay home.
He didn't. Darry shouted, "Come on. I'll fight anyone!" And Paul stepped up. But I guess Darry didnt want to fight him because he use to be his buddy. Darry just didnt want to lose his manlyness and step down.

Ponyboy needed to be at the rumble to show his solidarity with his fellow greasers. The greasers stood together as brothers against the society that looked down upon them much as low income youngsters do today. It was important that he participated in the fight to prove his loyalty.
