The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion are the three traveling companions to Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of "The Wizard of Oz."
Specifically, Dorothy and Toto end up in Oz after their house is uprooted during a tornado in their home state of Kansas. Friendly Munchkins and a good witch tell the two accidental visitors to follow the Yellow Brick to the Emerald Palace of the Wizard of Oz in order to find a way back home. On the way to the Emerald City, Dorothy and Toto meet and make friends with three Oz natives, in the order in which they are listed above.
Dorothy and Toto travel to the Emerald City with the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion.
Traveling to Oz with Dorothy and her little dog, were the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Main and the Scarecrow. Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz) had FOUR companions. Each one was in search of something just as Dorothy was searching of a way to get home. The Tin Man was in search of a heart, The Cowardly Lion was in search of courage, and The Scarecrow was in search of a brain. Of course, Dorothy's FOURTH companion was her beloved dog, Toto.
In the book and the film, they are Toto, the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Of the four, she most likely knows best Toto, who accompanies her from Kansas; and the Scarecrow, whom she meets first of her three journeymates. In addition, others who help her may be considered as candidates for friendship. The Good Witch of the North directs her to the Emerald City, to meet with the Wizard. The Soldier with Green Whiskers tells her to seek help from Glinda after the Wizard's hot air balloon takes off without Dorothy and Toto. And Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, tells Dorothy what to do to get back home. In the film version, farmhands Hickory, Hunk and Zeke also appear respectively as the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, in her adventurous dream. And the film ends with her saying how happy she is to be with her family and farmhand friends.
